[Died] April 14, 1978. Cambridge. British critic. Studied at Cambridge University. Taught at his alma mater. Founded and edited the quarterly magazine Scrutiny (1932-53). He advocated the establishment of strict standards for literary criticism based on detailed analysis of the original text and ethical value judgments, and had a great influence on academic and literary circles. His works include New Bearings in English Poetry (32, new edition 50), which evaluates the new trends in poetry including those by T. S. Eliot; Revaluation (36), which covers the period from Milton to the Romantic period; The Great Tradition (48), which places J. Austen, G. Eliot, H. James, and Conrad at the center of British novels; The Common Pursuit (52); DH Lawrence: Novelist (55); Anna Karenina and Other Essays (68); and Dickens the Novelist (70).
