It is known that special plants grow in serpentine areas, reflecting the chemical and physical properties of serpentine, and serpentine plants are plants that grow only in serpentine areas. Serpentine here refers to a broad definition that includes altered ultramafic rocks as well as ultramafic rocks such as peridotite. Representative serpentine areas in Japan include Mount Yubari and Mount Apoi in Hokkaido, Mount Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture, Mount Shibutsu in Gunma Prefecture, Sekinomiya in Hyogo Prefecture, Engoji in Kochi Prefecture, and Mount Higashi-Akaishi in Ehime Prefecture.

蛇紋岩の化学的･物理的特性を反映し，蛇紋岩地帯には特殊な植物が生育することが知られているが，蛇紋岩地帯に限って生育する植物が蛇紋岩植物である。ここでいう蛇紋岩とは，変質した超塩基性岩のほか，カンラン岩などの超塩基性岩そのものも含めた広義のものをさす。日本の代表的な蛇紋岩地帯は，北海道の夕張岳，アポイ岳，岩手県の早池峰（はやちね）山，群馬県の至仏山，兵庫県の関宮，高知県の円行寺，愛媛県の東赤石山などである。
