蛇紋岩の化学的・物理的特性を反映し,蛇紋岩地帯には特殊な植物が生育することが知られているが,蛇紋岩地帯に限って生育する植物が蛇紋岩植物である。ここでいう蛇紋岩とは,変質した超塩基性岩のほか,カンラン岩などの超塩基性岩そのものも含めた広義のものをさす。日本の代表的な蛇紋岩地帯は,北海道の夕張岳,アポイ岳,岩手県の早池峰(はやちね)山,群馬県の至仏山,兵庫県の関宮,高知県の円行寺,愛媛県の東赤石山などである。
