1728‐62 Russian emperor. Reigned 1761-62. Son of Peter I's daughter Anna, who married Duke Gottorp of Holstein. In 1742, he was nominated as successor by his aunt, Elisabeth Petrovna, but he was of low intelligence. He was an admirer of Frederick II of Prussia, and after Russia entered the Seven Years' War (1756-63), Peter's "little court" became the center of Prussian machinations, straining his relationship with his aunt. After ascending to the throne, he made peace with Frederick, who was at war, and enforced Prussian discipline in the military and government offices.
