A crab of the family Xanthocephalidae (illustration) that is found widely in the western Pacific Ocean south of the Boso Peninsula and in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the crabs that is most commonly found on rocky reefs, living under stones and not very fast. It may raise its claws to threaten predators, but it often folds its claws and walking legs and pretends to be dead. The carapace is 4 cm wide. The carapace is fan-shaped with an open front, with a clearly divided carapace area and five triangular teeth on the front edge. Individuals vary in color from dark bluish gray to dark brown, and often have irregular white or grayish white spots or large black-brown spots, which, together with the bumpy carapace, is thought to camouflage the surroundings.
