Lineage - Lineage (English spelling)

A lineage, sometimes called a tribe, is a group of unilineal descent in which the members have a clear genealogical relationship to a common ancestor. It is also called a lineage or linagege. Lineages are often distinguished from clans or clans, which are more inclusive descent groups that acknowledge descent from a mythical common ancestor but cannot clearly trace their genealogical relationship to that ancestor.

系族とよばれることもあるが、単系出自集団のうち、共通の祖先と各成員の間の系譜関係がはっきりしているような集団をいう。リニージ、リニエッジともいう。リネージは、しばしば神話的な共通の始祖からの出自を認めるが、その始祖との系譜関係をはっきりとはたどれない、より包括的な出自集団であるクランあるいは氏族と用語上区別される。
