An old town in Nita District, occupying the upper reaches of the Hii River in eastern Shimane Prefecture. Along with Nita Town, it has long been a major producer of Japanese beef cattle, and Yokota, the center of the area, is known for its cattle market. Until the early Meiji period, iron production from iron sand mining was popular. One of the area's specialties is the Unshu abacus. The area to the south, bordering Okayama Prefecture, is part of Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. 島根県東部,斐伊(ひい)川上流部を占める仁多(にた)郡の旧町。古くから仁多町とともに和牛飼育が盛んで,中心の横田は牛市で知られる。明治初期まで砂鉄採取による製鉄が盛んであった。特産には雲州そろばんがある。南の岡山県境一帯は比婆道後帝釈(ひばどうごたいしゃく)国定公園に属する。2005年3月仁多郡仁多町と合併し町制,奥出雲市となる。189.42km2。7972人(2003)。
