Litmus moss

A species of lichen in the Littoral Family. It grows on rocks along the Mediterranean coast and the coasts of West Africa. The lichen body is grayish white, slightly branched, and grows upright on rocks. It grows to a height of about 10 cm, and produces disk-shaped puberta with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm on the branches.

Litmus moss is also the general name for the genus Roccella . The genus Roccella contains about 30 species, all of which are used as raw materials for litmus dye, but the main species are Roccella and a few similar species. Some species of the genus Roccella are known to grow on tree trunks, and R. montagnei , which is distributed in Southeast Asia, is a representative example. Lichens of the Roccellaceae family do not grow in Japan.

地衣類リトマスゴケ科の1種。地中海沿岸や西アフリカの海岸の岩上に生える。地衣体は灰白色で、すこし枝を出し、岩上に直立して生える。高さ10センチメートル内外で、枝の上などに直径1～2ミリの円盤状の子器をつける。

　リトマスゴケはリトマスゴケ属Roccellaの総称名でもある。リトマスゴケ属は約30種を含み、いずれもリトマス染料の原料として利用されるが、おもなものはリトマスゴケとこれに近似の数種である。リトマスゴケ属の種類のなかには樹幹に生えるものも知られていて、東南アジアに分布するR. montagneiはこの代表的なものである。なお、リトマスゴケ科の地衣類は、日本では生育していない。
