A species of lichen in the Littoral Family. It grows on rocks along the Mediterranean coast and the coasts of West Africa. The lichen body is grayish white, slightly branched, and grows upright on rocks. It grows to a height of about 10 cm, and produces disk-shaped puberta with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm on the branches. Litmus moss is also the general name for the genus Roccella . The genus Roccella contains about 30 species, all of which are used as raw materials for litmus dye, but the main species are Roccella and a few similar species. Some species of the genus Roccella are known to grow on tree trunks, and R. montagnei , which is distributed in Southeast Asia, is a representative example. Lichens of the Roccellaceae family do not grow in Japan. [Hiroshi Inoue] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
