An evergreen perennial fern of the Dryopteridaceae family. In the strict sense, Tectaria is the species T. decurrens (Pr.) Copel., found from Okinawa to New Guinea, but in horticulture it is sometimes used as a general term for the Tectaria genus. Tectaria in the strict sense is native to tropical and subtropical regions, and its leaves are polymorphic, ranging from simple to pinnate, from which the name Nanabakeshida (seven-leaved fern) comes. The surface often has yellow hawk's feather-like spots. The veins of the leaves are finely connected in a reticulate pattern, with irregular free veins. Copel.
