〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. The place where Shakyamuni passed away. It is said that when Shakyamuni passed away in the fortress of Kushinagara , the surrounding Sāla trees turned white like white cranes and withered. By extension, it means the death of Shakyamuni. It is also used to mean monks' temples, the forests of monks' temples, or a person's final moments. Tsuruha- no -hayashi. 〘名〙 仏語。釈迦入滅の場所。釈迦が拘尸那掲羅(クシナガラ)城で入滅した時、そこを取り巻いていた沙羅双樹(さらそうじゅ)が白鶴のようにまっ白に枯れたというところからいう。転じて釈迦の死。また、僧寺や、僧寺の樹林、あるいは人の臨終の意などにいう。つるのはやし。《季・春》※本朝文粋(1060頃)一四・朱雀院周忌御願文〈大江朝綱〉「臣等鶴林雲帰、鱗水義絶」※浮世草子・男色大鑑(1687)六「木挽草滋林(クハクリン)の患禰宜町卧猪の床とならんと歎くのみなりしが」 〔杜甫‐望牛頭寺詩〕
