1847‐1917 A late Qing Dynasty Peking Opera actor. His name was Jin Fu. He was from Jiangxia (Wuchang), Hubei Province. His father was Tan Zhidao, known for his high-pitched voice like a skylark and nicknamed Tan Xiaotian. He was the Lao Dan (old woman role) or Lao Sheng (leading actor) of the Sanqingban troupe, a troupe of Cheng Chang Gung. In contrast to his father Xiaotian, Tan Xinpei was called Little Xiaotian. At first, he played Wu Sheng (leading actor who mainly performed in the fight scenes) and Wu Chou (third-rate male in the fight scenes), but later he played Lao Sheng. Originally, the Lao Sheng style (chants) of Peking Opera was characterized by "a dynamic voice that makes full use of the dantian," but Tan Xinpei created the style of the so-called "Tan school" by creating "leisurely and twisted" and sentimental scenes.
