A perennial plant of the family Araceae (APG classification: Ericaceae), it is a chlorophyll-free, all-white saprophytic plant. It is also known as silver orchid, and its Chinese name is crystal orchid. The white flowers open downward from August to October, with a corolla about 2 cm long and a five-lobed ovary. The stem grows tall during the fruiting season, and the capsule faces upward. It grows in forests in hilly and mountainous areas, and is widely distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Asia, and North America.

イチヤクソウ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の多年草で、葉緑素をもたず、全体が白色の腐生植物。別名ギンリョウソウモドキ、中国名は水晶蘭(らん)。8～10月に白い花が下向きに開き、花冠は長さ約2センチメートル、子房は5室。茎は果期に高く伸長し、蒴果(さくか)は上向く。丘陵帯から山地帯の林内に生え、北海道、本州、四国、九州およびアジア、北アメリカに広く分布する。
