A customary unit of volume. The symbol is l or L. 1 l is another name for 1 dm 3 (Conference General des Poids et Mesures, 1964). When the metric system was established, the mass of 1 dm 3 of pure water at about 4°C, which has the maximum density at standard atmospheric pressure, was defined as 1 kg, and the prototype kilogram was created, and the volume of 1 dm 3 was specifically defined as 1 l . However, due to manufacturing errors in the prototype kilogram, the mass of the prototype was set to 1 kg, and based on the results of precise measurements of the volume of 1 kg of pure water, the unit was revised in 1950 to "1 l is 1.000028 dm 3 ". Since then, confusion between 1 l and 1 dm 3 has become so great that it has been revised again to "1 l is another name for 1 dm 3 ", regardless of the mass of pure water. The unit name comes from the Greek word litras (scale). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
