When stereoisomeric reactants give stereoisomeric products, the phenomenon in which one stereoisomer is produced at a faster rate in preference to the other stereoisomers is called stereoselectivity, and such a process is called a stereoselective process. All stereospecific reactions are stereoselective, but the reverse is not necessarily true. For example, trans-2-phenylcyclohexyl tosylate (A) gives 1-phenylcyclohexene (B) by stereoselective elimination of paratoluenesulfonic acid. However, the cis isomer C of A also stereoselectively gives B, so this reaction is not stereospecific. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
