Nakhichevan' (Autonomous Republic)
An autonomous republic within the Trans-Caucasian Republic of Azerbaijan. Located in the southwestern part of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, it borders the Republic of Armenia to the north, and the Aras River forms the border with Iran and Turkey to the south. It is an exclave in the west of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with a plain in the Aras River basin. Its area is 5,500 km2 and its population is 295,000 (1989). Its capital is Nakhchivan. In agriculture, cotton, tobacco, and grains are cultivated in the Aras River basin, and grapes and other fruit trees are cultivated in the foothills, and sericulture is carried out in the Ordubat region in the south.
