Nakhichevan' (Autonomous Republic)

An autonomous republic within the Trans-Caucasian Republic of Azerbaijan. Located in the southwestern part of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, it borders the Republic of Armenia to the north, and the Aras River forms the border with Iran and Turkey to the south. It is an exclave in the west of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with a plain in the Aras River basin. Its area is 5,500 km2 and its population is 295,000 (1989). Its capital is Nakhchivan. In agriculture, cotton, tobacco, and grains are cultivated in the Aras River basin, and grapes and other fruit trees are cultivated in the foothills, and sericulture is carried out in the Ordubat region in the south.

ザカフカスのアゼルバイジャン共和国に属する自治共和国。小カフカス山脈の南西部に位置し，北はアルメニア共和国と隣接し，南はアラス(アラクス)川がイラン，トルコとの国境をなす。アゼルバイジャン共和国の西の飛地となっており，アラス川流域に平野が開ける。面積5500km2，人口29万5000(1989)。首都ナヒチェバン。　農業では，アラス川流域の綿花，タバコ，穀物，山麓地帯のブドウなどの果樹栽培，南部のオルドゥバト地区の養蚕がある。
