In Descartes' Discourse on Method (1637), he started from a methodical doubt, which is to doubt everything in order to discover an absolutely indubitable truth, and as a result arrived at the proposition "I think, therefore I am" ("I must be something because I think"), which he called "the first principle of philosophy" ("cogito ergo sum" is the Latin translation of the proposition).
