Located in the western Aegean Sea, it is the second largest island in Greece. In ancient Greek it was called Euboia. It was once connected to the mainland, but is now connected by a bridge. The mountainous area is covered with forests, and wheat, grapes, and olives are cultivated, livestock are raised, and beekeeping is practiced. It also produces lignite and other products. It was the center of Ionian colonial activity from the 8th to 6th centuries BC, but fell into decline due to conflicts between cities. The main city is Chalcis. Area: 4,167 km2 .
