Broadside ballad

… [Hiroshi Sugiura]
[English Ballads]
Until around the 15th century, English ballads were sung by people in a circle while dancing, but eventually they came to be sung by minstrels and took on a more narrative element. In the Elizabethan era, it was common to print and sell short ballads about topics, and these were called broadside ballads. Since the Parsi era, attempts have been made to collect and record traditional ballads, but the most well-known of these is the compilation by Francis J. Child (1825-96), a professor at Harvard University in the United States, at the end of the 19th century. Since then, research on English ballads has usually relied on Child's classification.
