...It was a temple of great political importance, as it housed the Roman treasury, legal documents and Senate resolutions. The festival was called Saturnalia, and was celebrated for seven days from December 17th, with slaves given special freedom, and in a joyous and cheerful way. During this festival, people exchanged candles and small dolls as gifts, a custom that was later inherited by Christians in Christmas.
