This refers to fused ceramic whiteware used for industrial purposes, in which the main crystalline phase is alumina (ASTM-C242, American Society for Testing and Materials standard). Aluminous porcelain is porcelain in which part or most of the quartz or kaolin components of true porcelain have been replaced with alumina. Sintered material consisting only of alumina is called sintered alumina. Depending on the alumina content, the hardness, electrical insulation, fire resistance, acid resistance, and other properties of the porcelain improve, but the porcelainization temperature also increases. Sintered alumina has a firing temperature of 1850°C or higher, so for practical alumina porcelain, kaolin, talc, alkaline earth metal oxides, etc. are usually added to lower the firing temperature to 1650-1800°C. Sintered alumina has a fire resistance of 2050°C, but begins to undergo plastic deformation at around 1400°C. Because it has excellent mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties, it has the widest range of uses among oxide ceramics.
