Oshimizu Tunnel - Oshimizu Tunnel

A 22,221m long double track railway tunnel between Jomo-Kogen and Echigo-Yuzawa on the Joetsu Shinkansen. Construction began in 1971 and was completed in 1981. The east entrance is in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, and the west entrance is in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture. Five inclined construction shafts and one adit were built, and the tunnel was divided into six sections. Blessed with hard geology, 66% of the tunnel was constructed using full face excavation and upper half face excavation methods. At the time of completion, it was the longest mountain tunnel in the world, surpassing the Simplon Tunnel (19.8 km long) between Switzerland and Italy. It is the fifth longest railway tunnel in Japan.

上越新幹線上毛高原(じょうもうこうげん)―越後(えちご)湯沢間の長さ2万2221メートルの複線鉄道トンネル。1971年（昭和46）着工、1981年工事完了。群馬県みなかみ町に東坑口、新潟県湯沢町に西坑口がある。工事用斜坑5本、横坑1本を設け、6工区に分割して施工した。堅硬な地質に恵まれ、66％の区間は、全断面掘削、上部半断面掘削工法によって施工した。竣工(しゅんこう)当時は、スイス―イタリア間のシンプロン・トンネル（延長19.8キロメートル）を抜いて世界最長の山岳トンネルであった。鉄道トンネルとしては、日本で第5位の長さをもつ。
