A general term for marine sponges of the Euplectellidae family of the class Hexactinellidae. A pair of small shrimp ( Spongicola ), usually male and female, are usually housed in the stomach cavity of this sponge, and since this is where they live their whole lives, the name Kairo Do-ken ("living together in the same cave") was given to them, meaning that they grow old together when they live, and are buried together when they die. They are found in Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, Tosa Bay, etc., and stand upright by sticking a bundle of root hair-like bone fragments into the seabed at depths of 100 to 1,000 meters.
