Li Ji; Li Chi
[Born] Kaioh 14 (594)
[Deceased] Sosho 2 (669).12.3.
A famous general in the early Tang Dynasty of China. Born in Lihu, Caozhou (near Danxian, Shandong Province). His real name was Xu Shiji, and his pen name was Mao Gong. His posthumous name was Zhenwu. He was originally a subordinate of the great hero Li Mi at the end of the Sui Dynasty. He went to the Tang Dynasty and was given the surname Li, avoiding Taizong's given name and calling himself Li Ji. He was known for his contributions to the pacification of the great heroes Dou Jiande and Wang Shichong. In 630, together with Li Jing, he attacked the headquarters of the Eastern Turks and won a great victory, and later defeated Xue Yantuo on the northern border. In his later years, he accompanied Taizong on his personal campaigns against Goguryeo, and after several failures, he finally defeated them in 668, the first year of Gaozong's reign. This spread the power of the Tang Dynasty to the Korean Peninsula. Taizong personally appointed him as a great general on par with Li Jing.
