Kennyo - Kennyo

Japanese: 顕如 - けんにょ
Kennyo - Kennyo

A Jodo Shinshu monk from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The 11th head priest of Hongan-ji Temple. His given name was Kosa. He was born on January 6, 1552. His father was Shonyo (1516-1554) and his mother was Zoshin-in, the daughter of Gonchuunagon Niwatashigechika (1495-1533). He was adopted by Kujo Tanemichi (1507-1594). He was ordained at Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple on August 12, 1554 (Tenbun 23), and was appointed Hogen in April of the following year, 1555 (Koji 1). At the age of 15, he married a daughter of Hosokawa Harumoto, and in 1558 (Eiroku 1), he gave birth to his eldest son, Kyonyo. The following year, in 1559, he was appointed Monzeki (head priest) as a reward for his contribution to the ceremonies, and Hongan-ji became a Monzeki temple for the first time. In September 1570 (Genki 1), he confronted Oda Nobunaga and urged his followers in various provinces to rise up in arms, and from then on fought against Nobunaga until 1580 (Tensho 8) (the Ishiyama War). However, on April 9 of the same year, he made peace with Nobunaga by imperial order, left Ishiyama Hongan-ji, and moved to Saginomori in Kishu (Wakayama Prefecture). Letters that Kennyo issued to various places during the war years are collected in the "Kennyo Shonin Monan" and are still preserved at Nishi Hongan-ji. After Nobunaga's death, in July 1583, Hongan-ji Temple was moved to Kaizuka in Izumi (Osaka Prefecture), but Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave the temple land in Tenma, Osaka, and in August of the same year, the temple was moved there. In March 1591, Hideyoshi donated land in Nishi-Rokujo, Kyoto, and in August of the same year, Kennyo and Kyonyo moved there. This is the current site of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. He died on November 24, 1580, at the age of 50, and was given the posthumous name of Shinraku-in.
