Li Shikou

1889‐1971
Chinese geologist. Born into a farming family in Huanggang County, Hubei Province, he studied shipbuilding in Japan, but later completed geology at the University of Glasgow in the UK, becoming one of China's leading geologists. He is famous as the founder of geomechanics. In 1952, the Ministry of Geology was established under the new government, and he became its director, promoting the development of the Daqing oil field. In 1958, he joined the Communist Party and was elected to its Central Committee. His books include An Introduction to Geomechanics, Quaternary Glaciers of China, Geology of China, and Earthquake Theory. [Yabuuchi Kiyoshi]

中国の地質学者。湖北省黄岡県の農家に生まれ，日本で造船学を学んだが，後にイギリスのグラスゴー大学で地質学を修め，中国を代表する地質学者となった。地質力学の創始者として有名である。1952年に新政府の下で地質部が置かれたが，彼はその部長となり，大慶油田の開発を推進した。58年に共産党に入党し，中央委員に選ばれた。著書に《地質力学概論》《中国第四紀氷河》《中国地質学》《地震論》などがある。【藪内清】
