...Former name of province. Also written as Iyo. Yoshu. Covers the entire area of ​​present-day Ehime Prefecture.
[Ancient times]
Kami Province (Engishiki) belonging to the Nankaido. The provincial capital was in Ochi District (Imabari City and its surrounding area), and within the province were the districts of Uma, Kanno (later renamed Nii), Sufu, Kuwamura, Ochi, Noma, Kazahaya, Wake, Onsen, Kume, Iyo, Ukena, and Uwa (later separated from Kita District). It is said that in the past there were five kuni no miyatsuko (provincial governors) in Iyo, Numa, Kumi, Oichi, and Kazahaya, and after the Taika Reforms it became Iyo Province.

　南海道に属する上国(《延喜式》)。国府は越智（おち）郡(今治市とその周辺)におかれ，国内には，宇麻(宇摩)，神野(のち新居（にい）に改める)，周敷（すふ），桑村，越智，野間，風早（かざはや），和気，温泉（ゆ），久米，伊予，浮穴（うけな），宇和(のち喜多郡を分郡)の各郡があった。古く伊余（いよ），怒麻（ぬま），久味（くみ），小市（おち），風速の5国造が置かれていたといわれ，大化改新後伊予国となった。…
