A collection of colloquialisms

A Japanese dictionary in 26 volumes. It was revised and expanded based on Genen by Ota Zensai (1759-1829). It was named in contrast to Gagenshuran, and contains a wealth of proverbs, slang, Chinese words, Buddhist terms, and proper nouns, making it a notable collection of colloquial vocabulary from the Edo period. Words are arranged in the order of the horizontal lines of the Japanese syllabary (akasa... ikishi...) down to the second syllable, with definitions and references. It was handed down in manuscript form, but Inoue Yorikuni and Kondo Mikaki revised it into the current alphabetical order and further expanded it, publishing it in three volumes as Zoho Rigenshuran (1899-1900).

国語辞書。26巻。太田全斎(おおたぜんさい)（1759―1829）の著『諺苑(げんえん)』をもとに増補改編されたもの。『雅言集覧(がげんしゅうらん)』に対して名づけられたもので、俗諺(ぞくげん)、俗語のほか漢語、仏教語、固有名詞などを豊富に収録しており、江戸時代の口語語彙(ごい)集として注目される。五十音図の横段の順序（アカサ…イキシ…）に第二音節まで従って語を配列し、語釈を加え、出典を示す。写本で伝わってきたが、井上頼圀(よりくに)・近藤瓶城(みかき)が現行の五十音順に改編、さらに増補して『増補俚言集覧』三冊（1899～1900）として刊行された。
