A bird of the order Accipitridae. It breeds in the Palearctic region and parts of Africa, and migrates to Africa, South Asia, and the Malay Archipelago in winter. Its upperparts are dark brown, and its underparts are pale yellowish brown with dark brown markings. The total length is about 52 cm for males and about 57 cm for females. It is the second most common hawk in Japan after the black kite, and is often found in forests, grasslands, and farmland on plains and low mountains. It preys mainly on small mammals such as mice and moles, and also eats frogs and small birds, but catches most of its prey on the ground. Its tail is shorter than that of a black kite, and a soaring buzzard has a distinctive fan-shaped, slightly rounded tail at the tip. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
