In Greek mythology, Ares is the god of war and murder. He is the son of Zeus and Hera, and is said to have come from the savage and warlike Thrace. In Roman mythology, he is identified with Mars. He has a violent personality, is thoughtless, and likes fighting for the sake of fighting. He is one of the twelve Olympian gods, but has relatively few myths and legends of his own. The Greeks, from Homer onwards, seem to have preferred stories of Ares being defeated by intelligence, rather than the triumph of his brute force. During the Trojan War, Ares sided with Hector, commander-in-chief of the Trojan army, and attacked the Greeks, but was wounded by the hero Diomedes, who was aided by the skillful actions of the goddess Athena, and fled back to Olympus, crying out in a loud voice. When Ares' son Cycnos fought Hercules, his father Ares rushed to his aid, but was prevented by Athena, wounded, and retreated to Olympus. When Ares tried to kill Achilles to avenge the grudge of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, he was stopped by Zeus. There are also many legends in which Ares is portrayed as an enemy, such as the one in which he was imprisoned in a bronze jar by the Aloadei (Otus and Ephialtes) and was finally rescued by Hermes 13 months later. On the other hand, there was a glamorous story of him falling in love with the goddess Aphrodite, but the two were caught in a trap by the goddess's husband Hephaestus during a secret meeting, and his thoughtless nature caused him to be a supporting character. Ares' sons also inherited his violent and cruel nature, and Oenomaus killed his daughter's suitors one by one with a weapon given to him by his father. Among his sons, Cycnus, the Thracian king Diomedes, and Lycaon were defeated by Hercules. The animals offered to Ares were dogs and vultures, characteristic of incantations.
