A perennial plant of the lily family, native to Argentina. It was introduced to Japan in the mid-Meiji period as an ornamental plant, and there are many varieties. It has underground bulbs 12-20 mm in diameter, and has a stinky smell similar to green onions. It has many broad, fleshy, linear leaves 15-30 cm long. In spring, it produces flower stalks 10-20 cm high, and produces single bluish white flowers about 3 cm in diameter at the top. It has six lanceolate tepals that open into a star shape and become tubular at the base. It is often used to border flower beds. Around October, plant the bulbs in a sunny, well-drained location. It is hardy and easy to grow, and once planted, it will bloom well every year even if left unattended.
