Japanese: エイ(鱝∥鱏) - エイ

A general term for fish belonging to the order Strigiformes of the class Chondrichthyes. In English, stingrays are called rays, skates are called skates, sawfish are called sawfish, guitarfish are called guitarfish, and electric rays are called electric rays (illustration). They are widely distributed throughout the world, from tropical regions to polar regions. There are about 500 species worldwide, and over 75 species in the waters around Japan. Most live in saltwater, but freshwater rays of the family Potamotrygonidae that live in South America spend their entire lives in freshwater and cannot survive in saltwater.

軟骨魚綱エイ目に属する魚類の総称。英名では，アカエイ類をray，ガンギエイ類をskate，ノコギリエイ類をsawfish，サカタザメ類をguitarfish，シビレエイ類をelectric rayという（イラスト）。全世界の熱帯域から極地方まで広く分布する。世界に約500種，日本近海には75種余りが分布する。多くは海水で生活するが，南アメリカにすむPotamotrygonidae科の淡水エイは一生を淡水で送り，海水では生きられない。
