This book portrays the society and times of the time, focusing on the biographies of famous courtesans of Qinhuai, Nanjing, China, during the late Ming Dynasty. Yu Kai, who lived in Nanjing during the rise and fall of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, was deeply moved by the tragedies he witnessed unfolding before his eyes, and wrote about the splendid days of Nanjing in the past. It is modeled after Meng Yuanlu of the Song Dynasty, and is not simply a history of the beauty of flowers, as it expresses boundless admiration for the Ming Dynasty. A Japanese-printed version was also published during the Edo period. [Iwaki Hideo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
