Masefield, John
Born: June 1, 1878, Ledbury
[Died] May 12, 1967. A British poet born near Abingdon. He was fascinated by the sea from an early age and became a sailor. He traveled to the United States and wandered around. After returning to Japan, he became a magazine journalist and began writing poetry. He was recognized for his collection of poems, Salt-Water Ballads (1902), and his narrative poem, Dauber (1913), and was active in many fields, including playwriting, novels, and criticism. His play, The Faithful (1915), was based on the story of Chushingura (the Ako incident). His Shakespeare (1911) was one of the Home University series. In 1930, he was appointed Poet Laureate, succeeding Robert Bridges. In 1935, he was awarded the Order of Merit.
