American painter. Also known as Lichtenstein. Born in New York. One of the leading pop art artists. In the early 1960s, he produced works that took popular American comics as their subject matter and expanded the images of comics to include the meshes (dots) of printing, earning him a reputation as a quintessential pop artist who painted mass media images in accordance with the methods of mass media. In the 1970s, his subject matter expanded greatly, ranging from ancient Greek temple architecture and still lifes to masterpieces of modern art such as Picasso, Léger, and the Futurists, and his method of expression began to develop meshes and diagonal lines that imitated printed media, becoming closer to abstract compositions.

アメリカの画家。リキテンスタインとも。ニューヨーク生れ。ポップ･アートの代表的作家の一人。1960年代初め，アメリカの大衆的な漫画を主題に，印刷の網目(ドット)までも含めた漫画のイメージを拡大した作品を発表して，マス･メディアのイメージをマス･メディアの方法に準じて描いた，典型的なポップ･アーティストとして評価される。70年代になると主題が大きく広がり，古代ギリシアの神殿建築，静物画などからピカソ，レジェ，未来派などモダン･アートの名作にまで及び，その表現方法は，印刷メディアを擬した網目や斜線が展開して，抽象的な構成に近くなってきた。
