Land tied island

Japanese: 陸繫島 - りくけいとう（英語表記）land tied island

When an island near the coast that was separated from the continent (or a large island) becomes connected to the mainland through the development of a long, narrow sandbar or a triangular sandy landform called a cuspate spit, the island is called an island-tied island. The sandbar that connects the island to the mainland is called an island-tied sandbar (tombolo). When there is an island near the coast, the waves that come in from offshore are refracted or diffracted by the island and go around the back of the island. There, the waves that come around from both sides of the island cancel each other out, so the waves become calm.

大陸(または大きな島)から離れていた海岸近くの島が，細長い砂州または三角形をした尖角州cuspate spitと呼ばれる砂地形の発達によって，陸続きになった場合に，この島を陸繫島という。またこの島と本土をつなぐ砂州をとくに陸繫砂州(トンボロtombolo)という。海岸近くに離れ島があると，沖合から打ち寄せる波は島のために屈折あるいは回折して，島の後ろ側に回りこむ。そこでは島の両側から回りこんできた波がお互いにエネルギーを打ち消すために波静かとなる。
