It is a non-metallic inorganic material used in the high-temperature parts of various kilns as a high-temperature industrial material, and it accounts for the majority of refractories. The main components are metal oxides with high melting points, and there are many types depending on the combination. The demand for firebricks in Japan by use is shown in Table 1, with steel use overwhelmingly dominating at about 70%. In addition, recently, export use has come to account for more than 10% of total production.

…耐火物のうち，特定の形状に成形されたものをいう。高温工業用材料として，各種窯炉の高温部に使用される非金属無機材料であり，耐火物の主体を占める。主成分は高融点を有する金属酸化物類で，その組合せによって多くの種類がある。日本における耐火煉瓦の用途別需要量の割合は表1に示すとおりで，鉄鋼用が約70％と圧倒的に多い。また，最近では，これとは別に輸出用が全生産の10％以上を占めるまでになっている。
