The six basic classics of Confucianism: "I Ching," "Shu," "Poetry," "Rites," "Spring and Autumn Annals," and "Music." Poetry, Calligraphy, Rites, and Music (four academic fields combining literature, political science, cultural education, and self-cultivation), which were essential for Confucian intellectuals in the pre-Qin period, were gradually canonized as the orthodox documents of Confucianism from the Warring States period to the Han dynasty. In the process, Confucians added two more subjects, the Spring and Autumn Annals (history and political science) and "I Ching" (philosophy, political science, and self-cultivation), and respected these six classics as their basic classics. When Emperor Wu established the doctorate in classical Chinese, the five classics ("I Ching," "Shu," "Poetry," "Rites," and "Spring and Autumn Annals") were the subjects of the doctorate, excluding music.
