A school for boys who wanted to become army officers, which taught general subjects while also providing basic military science and military training, and fostered the military spirit. In the former Japanese army, the Heigakuryo Yonnen Gakusha was established in 1869 (Meiji 2), which was renamed the Army Yonnen Gakusha in 1862, and the Yonnen Gakusha Official Regulations were enacted in 1887. In 1896, central and local Yonnen Gakusha were established. It was managed by the Inspector General of Education, and entrance qualifications were selected by examination from 13- and 14-year-old applicants regardless of academic background. It took three years to study, and upon graduation, students advanced to the Army Officers Academy Preparatory School (later the Army Officers Academy). 将来陸軍の将校を志願する少年に対して,初歩的な軍事学や軍事訓練を加味しながら,おもに普通学科を教授し,軍人精神の涵養 (かんよう) をはかる学校。日本の旧陸軍では,明治2 (1869) 年の兵学寮幼年学舎がその始りで,同5年陸軍幼年学校と改称,1887年幼年学校官制が制定され,96年には中央と地方の幼年学校が設けられた。教育総監が管轄し,入学資格は学歴に関係なく 13歳と 14歳の少年の志願者から試験で選抜した。修業3年で,卒業とともに陸軍士官学校予科 (のち陸軍予科士官学校) へ進学した。東京,仙台,名古屋,大阪,広島,熊本に設置されていた。
