Pak Yong-ch'ŏl (English spelling)

Japanese: 朴竜喆 - ぼくりゅうてつ（英語表記）Pak Yong‐ch’ŏl

Korean poet. His pen name was Ryuji. He was born in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province. After graduating from Pai Chai High School, he went to Japan and studied German and English at the Tokyo School of Foreign Studies. After returning to Japan, he studied literature at Yeonhui College (the precursor to Yonsei University). In 1930, he published and organized the poetry magazine Shi Bungaku. Many of his works express the sadness of life and skepticism towards it using symbolic techniques, and he took a thoroughly artistic supremacist stance. In addition to his poetry, he also translated over 300 poems from England, America, Germany, etc., but these were not retranslations from Japanese that had been used before, but direct translations from the original languages.

朝鮮の詩人。号は竜児。全羅南道光州出身。培材高等普通学校卒業後日本に渡り，東京外国語学校でドイツ語，英語をまなび，帰国後延禧専門学校(延世大学校の前身)文科にて修学。1930年詩専門同人誌《詩文学》を発刊･主宰した。人生の哀愁，生への懐疑を象徴的手法でうたった作品が多く，徹底して芸術至上主義的立場に立った。詩創作のほかにもイギリス，アメリカ，ドイツ等の詩の翻訳も300余編に達するが，これらはそれ以前の日本語からの重訳ではなく，原語からの直接訳である。
