1904‐38 Korean poet. His pen name was Ryuji. He was born in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province. After graduating from Pai Chai High School, he went to Japan and studied German and English at the Tokyo School of Foreign Studies. After returning to Japan, he studied literature at Yeonhui College (the precursor to Yonsei University). In 1930, he published and organized the poetry magazine Shi Bungaku. Many of his works express the sadness of life and skepticism towards it using symbolic techniques, and he took a thoroughly artistic supremacist stance. In addition to his poetry, he also translated over 300 poems from England, America, Germany, etc., but these were not retranslations from Japanese that had been used before, but direct translations from the original languages.
