French violinist. Born in Bordeaux, he began playing the violin under his father's guidance. At the age of 13, he entered the Paris Conservatory. In 1897, he was discovered playing at a cafe by conductor Colonne (1838-1910), who appointed him as the principal violinist of the Colonne Orchestra. He became famous as a soloist throughout Europe and the United States. In 1905, he formed the Casals Trio with Casals and Cortot. In 1920, he opened a private music school with pianist Long, and in 1947, he held the Long-Thibaud International Music Competition. He visited Japan in 1928 and 1936, and died in an airplane accident during his third visit. Known for his refined tone and elegant expression, he opened up a unique realm in the performance of French music. Thibaut

German Roman law scholar. He served as professor at the universities of Jena and Heidelberg. During the Napoleonic Wars, when the national unification movement was in full swing, he advocated the construction of a new social order through a unified legal code based on the idea of natural law, and debated with Savigny and others. His main works are "Pandegtenlegal System" and "On the Necessity of a General German Civil Code."

フランスのバイオリン奏者。ボルドーに生まれ，父の手ほどきでバイオリンを始める。13歳でパリ音楽院に入学。1897年カフェで弾いているところを指揮者コロンヌ〔1838-1910〕に見出され，コロンヌ管弦楽団の首席奏者に就任。以後ソリストとして欧米各地で活躍し名声を確立した。1905年カザルス，コルトーと〈カザルス・トリオ〉を組む。1920年ピアノ奏者のロンと私立音楽学校を開き，1947年来〈ロン=ティボー国際音楽コンクール〉（音楽コンクール）を開催。1928年，1936年と来日し，３度目の来日の途次，航空機事故で死去。磨きぬかれた音色と気品に満ちた表現で知られ，フランス音楽の演奏で独自の境地を開いた。ピエルネの《バイオリン・ソナタ》（1900年）をはじめ，多くの作曲家に作品を献呈されている。→イザイエ／グラナドス／H.シェリング／フランセスカッティ
