French violinist. Born in Bordeaux, he began playing the violin under his father's guidance. At the age of 13, he entered the Paris Conservatory. In 1897, he was discovered playing at a cafe by conductor Colonne (1838-1910), who appointed him as the principal violinist of the Colonne Orchestra. He became famous as a soloist throughout Europe and the United States. In 1905, he formed the Casals Trio with Casals and Cortot. In 1920, he opened a private music school with pianist Long, and in 1947, he held the Long-Thibaud International Music Competition. He visited Japan in 1928 and 1936, and died in an airplane accident during his third visit. Known for his refined tone and elegant expression, he opened up a unique realm in the performance of French music.
