Kojimachi - Kojimachi

Japanese: 麴町 - こうじまち
Kojimachi - Kojimachi
A place name in the western part of Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. It stretches from east to west across Shinjuku Street (Koshu Kaido), which runs west from Hanzomon Gate of the Imperial Palace. In 1878, Kojimachi Ward of Tokyo Prefecture was established, including Marunouchi and Kasumigaseki, and in 1947 it merged with Kanda Ward to form Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. Today, Kojimachi has many buildings and is primarily an office district. Meanwhile, Bancho, to the north of Kojimachi, became an upscale residential area after the Meiji period, and foreign diplomatic missions such as the British Embassy were established there, but in recent years the number of office buildings has been increasing. [Masai Yasuo]
[history]
This was the name of the starting point of the Koshu Dochu (highway) heading west from Hanzomon. Until around the Keicho period (1596-1615), the area was also called Kokata, eventually becoming Kouji, and then the character for koji was added to form Kojicho.
