A city on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. Population: 2,500. Originating from the ancient city of Mesembria, it flourished in the Middle Ages as a strategic military and trade center for the Bulgarian and Byzantine empires. There are many remains of important churches, the earliest of which is the 5th-century basilica-style Mitropolia (Metropolitan Church). Examples of eclectic style churches include Svet Ivan (10th-11th centuries), and Greek cross-style churches such as Svet Stefan (12th century), Svet Ivan Neosveteni (Aliturgitos, 12th-13th century), and Pantokrator (12th-13th century).
