In the Heian and Kamakura periods, it was one of the most popular themes for folding screen paintings, along with Tsukinamie (pictures of the months) and Shiki-e (pictures of the four seasons), or in combination with these. Famous places from various provinces, known for their utamakura (poems), were selected, and the paintings were accompanied by seasonal and human events, and were appreciated in conjunction with waka poetry. This trend began in the mid-Heian period (10th century), and Yamato-e folding screens used for the Daijo-e banquet were also ritualized famous place paintings named after place names in the provinces of Yuki and Suki. From the Middle Ages onwards, the tradition of famous place paintings was passed down to picture scrolls, and continues to the early modern period's Rakuchu Rakugaizu (Screen in and around Kyoto) and ukiyo-e landscape prints by Hiroshige, Hokusai, and others.
