A city on the north bank of the Tone River at the southern tip of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It borders Abiko City in Chiba Prefecture across the Tone River, and the Kogai River flows to the north. The city center developed as a post station on the Rikuzenhama Kaido and a river port for water transport along the Tone River. It is a transportation hub with the Joban Line, the Chiyoda Subway Line, the Kanto Railway Jōsō Line, and National Route 6, and is rapidly becoming a satellite city of Tokyo. There are small textile and food factories, as well as electrical equipment, precision equipment, and machine tool factories, and the city's manufacturing shipments amounted to 362 billion yen (2003). In March 2005, Fujishiro Town in Kitasōma County was incorporated. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 69.94 km2 . 109,651 people (2010). 茨城県南端,利根川北岸の市。1970年市制。利根川をはさんで千葉県我孫子(あびこ)市に接し,北部に小貝川が流れる。中心市街は陸前浜街道の宿駅,利根川水運の河港として発達。常磐線およびこれに乗り入れる地下鉄千代田線,関東鉄道常総線,国道6号線が通じる交通要地で,東京の衛星都市化が著しい。織物,食品の小工場があるほか電気機器,精密機器,工作機械などの工場も進出し,製造品出荷額で3620億円(2003)を上げている。2005年3月北相馬郡藤代町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。69.94km2。10万9651人(2010)。
