1834‐1908 Dutch ophthalmologist. He studied medicine at the University of Utrecht, and in 1858 became an assistant at the Dutch Eye Hospital, where he engaged in ophthalmological research while practicing medicine. In 1862, he invented a method for testing visual acuity, which earned him fame, and in 1877 he became professor of ophthalmology at his alma mater.
