…General term for crustaceans belonging to the Cephalocarida subclass. They have the most primitive characteristics of all living crustaceans, and are tiny, measuring less than 3 mm in length. In 1926, DJ Scourfield discovered a fossil crustacean measuring about 3 mm in length in the middle or lower Devonian strata of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland, UK. At first glance, it resembles a modern crustacean, a type of fossil called Lepidocaris rhyniensis (Branchiopoda, Anostraca). It was named Lepidocaris rhyniensis and announced as a new family, genus, and species. …
