...The Inca imposed a duty of labor on the peasants, called mita, and made them engage in agriculture, mainly corn and potato farming, livestock farming such as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, gold, silver, and copper mining, and military service in times of emergency. Yanaconas (slaves, servants) and aculla (chosen women) were also conscripted from the peasants, who were placed in the palace to serve the sun god and weave textiles for the emperor while remaining virgins for the rest of their lives. The technologies that shaped the Inca civilization developed against the backdrop of local cultural traditions from the pre-Inca period, and were not necessarily created during the Inca period.
