Oda Nobunaga, who came to Kyoto with Ashikaga Yoshiaki, built this castle-like residence for Yoshiaki when he became Shogun. It was called Nijo Palace. The site was an extension of two blocks to the east and north of the original residence of Ashikaga Yoshiteru, and faced Karasuma to the east and Kasuga (present-day Marutamachi Street) to the south (this area is adjacent to the southwest corner of the present-day Kyoto Imperial Palace Gardens). Construction of the surrounding moat and stone walls began on February 2, 1569 (Eiroku 12), and was completed in 70 days. Nobunaga mobilized 15,000 to 25,000 samurai and laborers from the 14 provinces under his control, and personally took command on site. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
