A general term for the genus Lycaste in the family Orchidaceae. Around 30 species are distributed in Central and South America, and they grow either epiphytically or terrestrially. Leaves grow at the top of flattened, egg-shaped pseudobulbs, and a flower stalk emerges from the base, bearing a single flower at the top. The sepals are large and open in three directions. The petals are rather small and extend forward, and the lip petal is also small and shallowly divided into three lobes. Flower colors include yellow, green, pink, white, and brown. Keep in partial shade throughout the year, water generously during the growing season, and stop watering and allow to dry out during the leaf-shedding season. Keep in a well-ventilated place in summer, as cool as possible. Keep indoors or in a greenhouse at a temperature above 10°C in winter.
