Ulrich Stutz

1868‐1938
German legal historian. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, he studied at the University of Berlin, and later taught at the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Bonn, and Berlin, where he died. With his meticulous research and keen insight, he shed light on the history of church sects, advocated the concept of "private churches," and stressed the need for truly historical research into church law, becoming the father of modern church law historiography. His major works include "History of the Church Stipend System" and "Private Churches" (both 1895), "Church Law" (1904), and "History of Church Law" (1905).

ドイツの法制史学者。スイスのチューリヒに生まれ，ベルリン大学で学んだ後，バーゼル，フライブルク，ボン，ベルリンの各大学で教え，ベルリンで没した。綿密な考証と優れた洞察力とをもって教会派の歴史に光を当て，〈私有教会〉の概念の提唱者となったほか，教会法の真に歴史的な研究の必要性を説き，近代的教会法史学の祖となった。主著に，《教会聖職禄制度の歴史》《私有教会》(ともに1895)，《教会法》(1904)，《教会法史》(1905)などがある。
