1868‐1938 German legal historian. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, he studied at the University of Berlin, and later taught at the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Bonn, and Berlin, where he died. With his meticulous research and keen insight, he shed light on the history of church sects, advocated the concept of "private churches," and stressed the need for truly historical research into church law, becoming the father of modern church law historiography. His major works include "History of the Church Stipend System" and "Private Churches" (both 1895), "Church Law" (1904), and "History of Church Law" (1905).
