Tsukubusuma Shrine - Tsukubusuma Shrine
Located on Chikubu Island in Lake Biwa, Biwa Town, Shiga Prefecture (now Nagahama City). Former prefectural shrine. Shikinaisha. The water goddess Azaihime-no-mikoto (the main deity) was enshrined here from ancient times, and people prayed for the safety of lake traffic. Meanwhile, it became a training ground for mountain ascetic monks from the Nara period, and from the Heian period onwards, the area saw the development of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, with Benzaiten being enshrined as the local Buddha, and the shrine was called Chikubushima Gongen and Chikubushima Benzaitensha, with a monk from the shrine temple Hogonji serving as its head priest. Until the early modern period, the two were worshipped together as Chikubushima. During the Meiji period, the shrine was separated from Buddhism and Shinto by separating Buddhism and Shinto, and the Benzaiten Hall became the main hall. The main hall is a national treasure, and is said to have been relocated from part of Toyokuni-byo (Toyokuni Shrine) in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyori. The temple is connected to the neighboring Kannon Hall of Hogonji Temple (Important Cultural Property) by a corridor with a boat-bottom ceiling (Important Cultural Property). The Karamon Gate (the Karamon Gate of Toyokuni Shrine was relocated here) and the Heian period decorative Lotus Sutra known as the "Chikubushimakyo" are national treasures, as well as a Kamakura period colored silk Nyoirin Kannon statue and a stone five-story pagoda, among other Important Cultural Properties.
